SEO
Search engines read your store's titles, descriptions and links from what Shopify and the theme put on each page. Kyoto handles the technical part. What you write, such as product titles, descriptions and alt text, still matters most.
What Kyoto adds to every page
| Item | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Page title | The title you set under Search engine listing on a product, collection, page or blog post. Collection pages filtered by a tag and pages after the first get the tag and the page number added, so each URL has its own title. |
| Meta description | The description under Search engine listing, else your store's description. |
| Canonical URL | Shopify's canonical address of the page, so search engines don't count the same page twice. |
| Social sharing tags | Title, description and image for Facebook, X, LINE and other apps that show link previews. The image is sent 1200 px wide. |
The sharing image is chosen in this order: the product, article or collection image; the social sharing image in Online Store > Preferences; then Default share image in Theme settings > Social media.
Structured data
Structured data tells search engines what a page is about, which can show extra details in search results.
| Page or section | Data |
|---|---|
| Product pages | Product with price and availability, from Shopify's own product data |
| Blog posts | Article, from Shopify's own article data |
| Pages with breadcrumbs | Breadcrumb list, when Show breadcrumbs is on in Theme settings > Accessibility and more |
| FAQ section | FAQ questions and answers, when Add structured data is on in the section. If a page has two FAQ sections, turn it on in only one. |
| Store locations section | Each store with its address and map position |
| Events section | Each event with its date and place |
Search engines decide by themselves whether to show these details. Google's Rich Results Test shows what a page contains.
What you can do
- Write a title and description under Search engine listing for your main products and collections.
- Give every product photo and section image alt text. It helps search engines and people who use screen readers (see Accessibility statement).
- Keep the product title as the page's main heading. In the Product title block, Size changes only how the title looks. Leave Heading element on Auto so the title stays the main heading (h1) of the product page.
- Keep pages fast: see Performance tips.
- For stores in several languages, Shopify adds the language links between translated pages itself (see Languages).
