Accessibility statement

This statement covers the Kyoto theme for Shopify, version 1.0.0, made by Shopippi.

Our goal

Kyoto is designed and built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. We treat an accessibility problem caused by the theme as a bug and fix it like any other bug, at no cost to you.

A theme is only part of a store. Whether your store as a whole is accessible also depends on your content (images, text, colors you choose, videos), on your apps and on Shopify's checkout. This statement is about the theme's own code and default settings.

How Kyoto is built

These are the accessibility features designed into Kyoto. We check them before each release; if you find a place where one of them does not hold, it is a bug and we will fix it.

  • Keyboard: every menu, drawer, pop-up, gallery, carousel, filter and form can be used with the keyboard alone. A visible focus outline shows where you are; its width and offset can be increased in Theme settings > Accessibility and more.
  • Dialogs: the cart drawer, menus, quick buy and pop-ups keep keyboard focus inside while open, close with the Esc key and return focus to the button that opened them.
  • Screen readers: page landmarks, a skip link to the main content, labels on form fields and icon buttons, and spoken updates when the cart changes.
  • Color: the color schemes are built from the palette so text keeps a readable contrast. When you change a palette color, Kyoto chooses the more readable text color and adjusts secondary text. Information is not shown by color alone: for example, a sale shows a badge and the original price, not only a red price.
  • Motion: Kyoto follows the "reduce motion" setting of the shopper's device, and you can add a reduce motion button to the footer. Moving content has a pause control. See Motion.
  • Zoom: the theme never blocks zooming on phones, and layouts reflow to a single column on narrow screens.
  • Touch: buttons and links are sized for fingers on phones.
  • Images: every image uses the alt text you enter in Shopify; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Without JavaScript: products can be browsed and added to the cart even when scripts fail to load.

What you can do

  • Write alt text for every product photo and section image (in the Shopify admin, select the image and choose Add alt text).
  • Keep Underline links in text set to Always.
  • Check the contrast of any colors you change, including text on images (use the Overlay opacity settings to darken images under text).
  • Give videos captions or use the Transcript setting of the Video section.
  • Avoid putting important text inside images.
  • Test your store with the keyboard: press Tab through the home page, a product and the cart.

Known limitations

We list known accessibility issues of the current version in the Changelog until they are fixed. Third-party apps and Shopify's checkout are outside the theme and are not covered by this statement.
