Apps

Kyoto works with apps through Shopify's own two ways of adding them: app blocks and app embeds. Neither needs code in the theme, so removing an app never leaves code behind (as long as nobody edited the theme's files for it).

App blocks and app embeds

  • App blocks sit inside a section, where you put them. Select the section in the theme editor, choose Add block > Apps and pick the app. Kyoto passes the section's page width, spacing and color scheme to the app block. How the app looks inside its block is up to the app.
  • App embeds run on every page, for example a chat button or a tracking script. Turn them on or off under App embeds in the theme editor's left sidebar.

When an app offers both, prefer the app block: it loads only on the pages where you place it (see Performance tips).

Common apps and where they go

AppIn Kyoto
Product reviewsAdd the Reviews section under the product information and put the app's block in it. Ratings that the app saves in Shopify's standard review metafields also show as stars on product cards (Show rating in Theme settings > Product cards) and in the Rating block.
FiltersKyoto uses Shopify's own storefront filters. Choose them in the Shopify Search & Discovery app (see Collection page).
Complementary productsSet them in Shopify Search & Discovery; Kyoto shows them in the Complementary products block and section.
Subscriptions and pre-ordersThe Purchase options block shows the plans of a subscription or pre-order app on the product page.
TranslationTranslate & Adapt or another translation app translates your content; Kyoto's own words are already translated (see Languages).
Social feedsPlace the feed app's block in the Apps section or another section that accepts apps.

If an app's instructions ask you to paste code into the theme, ask the app developer for an app block instead. Code pasted into theme files is not carried over when you update Kyoto.
